My arrival

Oliver here. I was happy to see that my brother Navarre arrived safely in his new home. I hope he liked his plane ride better than I did. By the time my new Mommy and Daddy picked me up at the airport, I was pretty mad and a little confussed. I have some new brothers and sisters and I don't like them much either, although they're starting to grow on me. In particular, Dante, who looks alot like me, follows me around and I think I may decide to be his friend. Meanwhile, when my new Mommy picks me up I purr and purr because I like her alot. She thinks I'm about the most beautiful cat she's ever seen. There are some new pictures of me, but she can't figure out how to include them, so my new Daddy will have to help her out later on. I think I need another nap now. See you later. Oh, did I mention that my new Daddy keeps calling me Ollie?

Little Navarre arrived this weekend!

I would be lying if I said I wasn't full of anxiety and excitement last week! Saturday morning my brother Jeff and I both traveled to the airport to pick up our new sweetie, Navarre. When I peeked inside the carrier for the first time, his blue eyes struck me down. What an amazing boy!

He's spent the last few days slowly getting used to our home. This morning he saw me getting my laptop bag ready for work and he did a fantastic job of attacking it, marking it with his tiny claws and attempting to climb IN it. I think he wants to go to work with me!

Amy suggested I post this story here:

I had just finished a plate of waffles and happened to set it on the coffee table. So far, the little man has been very agile and showed no interest in the food so I figured it would be safe for a few minutes.....oh how wrong I was! One second he was in my lap and the next he lept for the coffee table. He managed to land RIGHT in the sticky syrup! Now, suddenly having all four paws covered in sticky stuff can certainly freak a poor cat out so Navarre bolted off the coffee table, ran around the living room and made for the kitchen. All the while he shook his paws between leaps doing a very odd hoppy-leap-dance through the house. I had to chase the poor baby down in order to stop him! His little mitts were covered in lint and dust bunnies and I had to give him a shallow bath to clean them off. I just couldn't stop laughing, he was too precious!

I have more cutie pics of him I'll have to post but for now there are two. :) Have I mentioned how amazing his blue eyes are? I've never seen a cat so beautiful!

Riesling's First litter

Riesling is sooo Fat. I can't believe she is going to be a mom cat soon. She is quiet and graceful but big as a house. I keep laughing to myself that she is going to only have one kitten. I soon will know. Her milk glands have fallen and I soo excitted.

Introducing Two Indiana Kittens

I have two kittens from Evinea Cattery who are almost a year old now and like baby-food chicken, feathers, chasing each other and boxes in that order. Their names are Frankie and Doodle, but who look so much alike that calling them Doodle and Ditto would have worked.

I never had cats before; these two are an interesting introduction to this world. I'm posting a link to the Shutterfly site so that you can view a slide show of pictures from the first 6 months of their world: http://share.shutterfly.com/action/slideshow?a=67b0de21b352d3dea471&sid=8Ict2rZu2cMN4&auto=1&idx=-1&m=1&d=1186328067109

Civil Rights for Who??

"The Animal Rights Movement promotes the use of “pet guardian” instead of “pet owner.” They consider animals and people as equals so therefore pet ownership is slavery. The extremists are opposed to all use, breeding and ownership of animals for any reason, including pet ownership. " I pulled this off another post. I don't mind the term "Pet Guardian" but it could screw things up legally. My life is just dandy the way it is. But I do take offense to the idea that cats are slaves to people.

I read this and thought "Wow, they can't tackle the slavery that exists in their own species in the world...why are they trying to mess up a good thing for us cats??" Don't these people understand that cats have servants...dogs have masters. But I mean really, who is the slave in the relationship? Do I serve my family? No. Does my family serve me? Yes, on a rotating basis because everyone wants to be the hand that feeds me. But who is going to pay attention to a young (albeit, beautiful) kitten? Fortunately the New York Times has an article today about a scientist named Carlos A. Driscoll at the National Cancer Institute who spent six years collecting my wild cousins all over the world. Then he spent all his time analyzing and comparing cat DNA...the man is on a mission! Guess what? All domestic cats are related and descended from five queens. In other words, we are all royalty! (Like you copuldn't tell that about moi just by looking at my picture!)

We really are the chosen species if you ask me...fortunately the New York Times backs me up with "Unlike other domestic animals, which were tamed by people, cats probably domesticated themselves, which could account for the haughty independence of their descendants. “The cats were adapting themselves to a new environment, so the push for domestication came from the cat side, not the human side,” Dr. Driscoll said. "

"Cats are “indicators of human cultural adolescence,” Driscoll remarked, since they entered human experience as people were making the difficult transition from hunting and gathering, their way of life for millions of years, to settled communities. Wheat, rye and barley had been domesticated in the Near East by 10,000 years ago, so it seems likely that the granaries of early Neolithic villages harbored mice and rats, and that the settlers welcomed the cats’ help in controlling them. "

Who is the slave now??? We helped you control your rodent problem and later helped stem the black plague and this is the attitude we get from a bunch of animla rights looneys?? We helped you at a difficult time and I still help my family at difficult times. Right now my family needs me. I am curled up on a lap keeping a human warm and happy. I even lower blood pressure by letting you pet me. I ate a bug last night so you didn't have to get toliet paper and grab it. Cats are helpful to you and we decide to live with you, not the other way around!

Sincerely,

Dash
